Colleges

Each member of our school community, students and staff, belongs to one of our four Colleges, named after local war veterans.  This fosters a sense of belonging and encourages healthy competition and success through individual and collaborative contribution to a team. Our Colleges orchestrate fantastic work for a variety of charities which has led to us being recognised as one of the top schools in the UK for fundraising.

Chloe Blackburn - Leader of Glover

"As the Glover leader, I aim for all our students to strive for success in and outside the classroom and to inject a sense of pride and joy into our school community. Like all our students, Glover College always supports at charity events, engage in our College competitions and earn lots of College points all around the school. This allows our students to develop such skills as problem-solving, collaboration and perseverance.

Glover is overrun with values of kindness and generosity. Our charitable link allows us to help and give to those who are struggling and in need of support. We understand growing up can be difficult at the best of times, exemplified when surrounded by negative situations and experiences. Mentor Link provides a safe space where these young people feel valued and supported.

Our College name comes from Frederick Glover who was a private in World War 1. He was born and lived in Lombard Street in Stourport before he went off to war where he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War medal as well as the Victory medal. He died in 1918."

Tom Crawley - Leader of York

"2023 is the first year that I have been the leader of the prestigious York College.  York college are determined to help our students and staff to work together with our local community and partner with them in our school values of Kindness, Determination and Respect. Since I joined the SHS family in 2021, I have been amazed by the kindness, determination and respect that is shown by our students. I am incredibly fortunate to assist them in many different pathways consisting of exciting opportunities, competitions and charity events to nurture a truly rewarding relationship between our in-school and out-of-school community. The reward for this is the numerous College points up for grabs for simply taking part which goes towards the College competition!

Our college is proudly named after our very own ex-SHS student, Alfred York who served, bravely fought and died in WW1. He was awarded the British War and Victory medals."

College Competitions

In the spirit of teamwork and working collaboratively, The Stourport High School and VIth Form operates a ‘College’ system across the whole school. Similar to the House system, students will become a member of one of the four Colleges and will belong to that College for their time at the school.

The College names were chosen by students from the names of the fallen heroes who are recorded on our Remembrance Board in the Large Hall.  The students chose the surnames of Frederick Glover, George Randle, Alfred York and William Bridgford to be the representative names of their Colleges.

Students compete in their tutor groups as a College in various competitions throughout the school week, in all subjects, as well as special challenges.  The Colleges work to raise money for various charities and support the local community; students will earn reward points throughout the school year by excelling in classroom work and in extra-curricular options afterschool each night.

Students work both individually and as a team in order to try to be the most successful College each year.  The Colleges also work within both the local and national community to help charities.  Students have in the past supported Children in Need, Operation Christmas Child, Hampers for the Elderly, as well as gaining the accolade of being in one of the top School Fundraisers for Comic Relief in the UK.

‘Winner of the Colleges Cup’ is presented at the end of the year when all of the points are added up.
