Beyond the classroom

INTRODUCTION

Broadening horizons beyond the realm of the classroom is an essential part of nurturing development and growth in young people. At The Stourport High School and VIth Form College we ensure that all year groups take part in activities that support their spiritual, moral, social and cultural education.

Examples include supporting the local primary schools through sport, supporting the elderly with Christmas hampers, and celebrating our international links through our partner schools in China, Jamaica, Estonia, Finland, Turkey, France and Spain.

Encouraging Leadership

Student leadership plays a significant role in the life of the school and students are encouraged to take an active part in shaping the future of the school. The impact of student voice is evident in a range of ways, from what appears on the lunch menu to how students prefer to learn. Student leadership is embraced across all year groups with over 30 students appointed into significant positions of responsibility including Learning Ambassadors, Tutor Group Representatives, College Councils and the School Council.

Outstanding Learning Experiences

We recognise that learning extends beyond the classroom and have established a strong tradition for providing excellence in our extended curriculum. Providing all of our students with a wide and varied menu of enrichment activities and trips both in the UK and abroad, enables our students to learn important life skills and in turn enhance personal experiences and perspectives on the world.

An extensive range of extra-curricular activities are available to all students and provide lots of opportunities for students to develop their interests. After school clubs take place on a weekly basis in almost all subject areas. In addition, there are also competitive sport fixtures, music and drama showcase evenings and productions, and a wide range study visits to places such as universities and the United Nations.

Excellent Facilities

Learning is enhanced through our fantastic facilities including our Additional Learning Facility (ALF), music studio, IT suites and superb sports facilities. Our sports provision makes full use of an athletics track, cycle track, netball dome and two all-weather pitches. Moreover, students access many other local facilities including Stourport Leisure Centre and Stourport Sports Club. Excellence in music and the performing arts is enhanced through music tuition in a wide range on instruments plus opportunities to perform in showcases and school productions, events which play a vital role in school life.

Enrichment Programme

We are proud to be able to offer over 70 different options in our brand new enrichment programme. Available to all students as part of their weekly curriculum, everyone has the opportunity to learn brand new skills or to develop existing skills further.

Our Year 11 students are getting additional access to their chosen GCSE option subject while Year 10 students are getting additional time to get to grips with the demands on the new GCSE Maths, English and Science courses. Students in Years 7 to 9 and VIth Form have an even bigger choice with the opportunity to opt in to any one of 43 enrichment activities. These include traditional activities such as music, drama, art and sport but also activities that have never before been offered in curriculum time such as Japanese, British Sign Language, Astronomy and Chess.
